He spends the winter doing a snowboard season in the alps and comes back to the UK for the summer, spreading his time between family, surfing and friends.

When Mike comes home, to me, it's like when the WWF builds up the return of The Rock in the good ol days of wrestling. Y'know, every message is like a new vignette each week on Raw building his return…

Anyway, Mike had been spending the end of spring building a bowl in the alps with one of the founders of Maverick skateparks - no joke, Mike is LITERALLY this cool! - and we've been talking about building a mini ramp for years, so were planning on getting it done when he came back this time round. On the maverick website, there's a section that says, if you want a skatepark, to contact them and they'll support you throughout the application, design and build of a skatepark for your town. I put together a solid case when I was drunk as f*ck and am absolutely disgusted by the fact that my idea wasn't picked out of the millions (AND MILLIONS) of ideas that likely get submitted to maverick skateparks every day - this is like when I wrote to dairylea all over again.

Sort it out, Mike!

So, here I am, at my dining table, tapping away - “NO, TRACEY, YOUR F*CKING INK CARTRIDGES HAVEN'T ARRIVED YET!”

Knock knock…

FINALLY, MY CLICHÉ HAS COME BACK!

Next comes a few weeks of some good ol’ fashioned, wholesome, skateboarding, creation and goood times - plus enough of a shove to get me motivated.

Tick-follow-tock

Five o'clock couldn't come quick enough, that day. “Let's grab them boards and go skating, where dya wanna go?”

We head to the local Lidl to pick up supplies and have a little skate.

“So what've you been up to, mate?”

Usually when I'm asked this question, there's a stock response - “nowt, mate. What do I want to do with my life?

I'd been thinking more and more about this skateboard thing - in between kidding myself that I could make millions doing a wrestling podcast/writing a blog/writing a book about my life as a wrestler/publishing all of the kids books I've written/being a voice-over artist/being a graphic designer (yeah, all totally viable, right?) - and trawling the internet for hours at night, looking at ways to get started out. I got my first bamboo skateboard in 2019, after schooling myself for a while on the impact Canadian maple decks have on the tree population of the world.

I've loved my bamboo boards since and, honestly, can't tell the difference between them and maple. Bamboo boards are strong, just as poppy and lighter than your common or garden maple deck. Not only that, but bamboo:

grows 10x faster than maple

regenerates from the same shoot so doesn't need to be re-planted after being cropped and

absorbs more carbon dioxide, releasing 35% more oxygen than similar hardwoods

That's not all, folks. Do nothing.

This time was different.

My utter disdain for my 9-5 was really pushing me to go the distance with it now - I've got to start, I've got to build. I don't know how many more times I can say “The share screen button is the little white rectangle with the pointy up arrow, next to the leave button” without pulling the mic off my headset, shoving it in a glass full of magnets and stamping on it!

So I revisited the suppliers I'd found in the past and thought on it a little bit harder.

Yeah, but that's about as far is it went…

For now.

“I've got wood there.” - double polaroid

My and the wife's current bambooards

So what've you been up to mate?

Dev: “Well, Mike, I've been looking at ways to get my skateboard business started.
